Chapter 6Verse 34
Dhyana Yoga
चञ्चलं हि मनः कृष्ण प्रमाथि बलवद्दृढम्। तस्याहं निग्रहं मन्ये वायोरिव सुदुष्करम्॥
cañcalaṁ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham, tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣkaram
Translation
The mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, strong and stubborn. I think controlling it is as hard as controlling the wind.
The moment
Krishna has just described the yogi whose mind is perfectly steady. Arjuna pushes back, and this is his honest objection.
What it means
Arjuna tells Krishna plainly that the mind is restless, powerful and hard to pin down. Trying to control it feels like trying to hold the wind.
Going deeper
It matters that this objection is in the Gita at all. Arjuna isn't a beginner. He's a disciplined warrior, and he still finds his mind ungovernable.
Krishna doesn't scold him for it. In the very next verse he agrees, then explains how it can be done anyway. The honesty comes first, then the method.
In your life
If you've tried meditating and felt like a failure, you're in good company. Write down one sentence describing how your mind actually behaves, without judging it. Seeing it clearly is the start of working with it.
The mind is as restless as the wind. Admitting that is the first step.
