Chapter 7Verse 19
Jnana Vijnana Yoga
बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते। वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः॥
bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate, vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ
Translation
After many births, the one who truly knows comes to me, realizing that Vasudeva is everything. Such a great soul is very rare.
The moment
Krishna has been describing four kinds of people who turn to him: the distressed, the curious, those who want something and the wise. Here he says what the wisest of them finally sees.
What it means
Understanding the divine isn't a quick event. After a very long journey, the wise person sees that everything is the divine. People who get there are rare.
Going deeper
'Vāsudevah sarvam iti', Vasudeva is everything, is the heart of the verse. Vasudeva is a name for Krishna, so the claim is that nothing stands outside him.
The phrase 'after many births' sets realistic expectations. The Gita doesn't promise sudden enlightenment. It describes something that ripens slowly, over a very long time.
In your life
If spiritual or personal growth feels slow, this verse is a reminder that slowness is normal. Pick a practice you can see yourself doing for years, not weeks, and judge it on that timescale.
After a long journey, the wise see the divine in everything. Such a person is rare.
